Using the Female Athlete to Explore the Erasure of Privacy
I think a lot about the erasure of privacy, the willingness to exhibit the intimate through social media platforms, and how this relates to life in 2025. I have played sports for as long as I can remember. The movements associated with playing basketball and later marathon training have become second nature to me, so much so in fact that I have dedicated an entire body of work to the female athlete at rest and in motion –and importantly — in various states of undress. I think of these women as distant cousins to Degas’ ballerinas, in various states of preparation and play to exhaustion and relief. As a woman depicting women, I seek to reframe and reclaim Degas’ studies. What do we make of the act of looking in, and how do we feel about our private lives being erased.
